The Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities Purchases the George A. Amole American Legion Post Home at 57 N. Franklin Street

The Pottstown Cluster of Religious Communities (PCRC) has purchased the George A. Amole American Legion Post Home at 57 N. Franklin Street, providing more space for its food and clothing operations that reach thousands of Pottstown area residents each year.

The building was acquired to move the Cluster Outreach Center, PCRC’s primary program site, to a larger facility, stated George Bell, PCRC board president. The official sale occurred Jan. 28, 2010, “The building had been zoned Traditional Town Neighborhood and, as such, required us to apply for a variance to use the property as we intend,” Bell said. “The variance, which was approved April 21st, allows us to implement renovations and move to this new site as quickly as possible.

For more than 15 years, PCRC has searched for a building that would offer more space to meet the needs of its programs and allow room to grow, Barbara Wilhelmy, PCRC executive director noted. “The American Legion property has more than twice the amount of space as our current facility at 137 Walnut Street, allowing program growth, safer work areas for our staff and volunteers and a greater presence in the community. 

“More importantly, with the increased usable office space, we can enhance our supportive services and become a leader in meeting individuals’ basic needs and transforming lives in the greater Pottstown community.” 

While PCRC has been successful for years distributing food, clothing and financial assistance, Wilhelmy said, “the new building provides the space needed to expand our supportive services. These are ultimately aimed at helping clients become more self-sufficient and better able to manage their households, independent of the assistance offered at the Outreach Center.”
